THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS. LEAVE OR BE SPOILED
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, is about Barbie (Played by Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Rita Arya, Ana Cruz Kanye, Dua Lipa, and Nicola Coughlan) suffering a crisis which leads her on an adventure that questions her existence.
From the get-go, I knew that Barbie would bring back cinema because of the hype of Barbie VS Oppenheimer and because it's BARBIE. Aside from the competition, Barbie has to be one of the greatest films I have ever seen.
The story was great. Margot Robbie (Who I will be referring to by the actor's name due to the extensive amounts of actresses that play Barbie in this movie) going to the real world to find out why she was having a crisis was genius; it brought stakes to why she was going out on an adventure. The one-hour and fifty-minute runtime of the movie was perfect; not a single second was wasted with this movie.
The comedy did not disappoint me at all. Everything about the movie was super funny, from the jokes like "I am going to beach you off Ken," "I have all the genitals," and "I'm here to see my gynecologist," all the way to the magical-looking set design.
When Margot and Ken (Played by Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans) travel to the real world, they use 7 different modes of transportation: Car, Boat, Rocket, Bike, Van, Snowmobile, and Roller Blades. These scenes used practical effects, but the funny tweets were that it was done like a slideshow.
Another great thing about this movie was it was Meta(Self-aware). Many references to the real world are made throughout the film, like, Zack Synder's Justice League, Cellulitis, and jabs at feminism and masculinity, which many people are upset about; I thought these jokes were hilarious and made this movie special.
The acting from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling was terrific. I knew both actors had range but didn't have this excellent content. Margot Robbie could switch from being a happy life Barbie to a depressed and hopeless Barbie. Ryan Gosling can beat from bimbo and empty-minded Ken to depressed and hopeless Ken.
The "villains" of the film Ken were all great. I put "Villains" in quotations because Ken is not the movie's villain. He might've taken over Barbieland and brainwashed all the Barbies to be his servants. Still, he was not a traditional villain, just a broken man. The best part of Ken's "Villany" was the dance battle between Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu dance battle over who gets to win Barbie.
All of these are excellent reasons why Barbie was a good movie, but what I believe makes this movie so great is the many messages it is trying to convey: You are enough for yourself, growing up is scary, but these are hardships that you will have to overcome, you can be anything if you put your mind towards it, the world is complex, but you have to face it. All these messages empower many people, but others are blinded by how the movie tries to convey them, leading me to my last point: The negatives of Barbie Movies.
The negative about this movie was that the comedy covers the message. I might love how funny the Barbie movie was. Still, it covers the movie's meaning by showing the matriarchy(Barbieland) and patriarchy(Real-World). This is the part of the movie that people dislike. It goes too political. But other than that, this movie is perfect the way it is.
Overall the Barbie movie was terrific. It might have had a message that was gift-wrapped too much in comedy, self-awareness, fantastic music, and pink, but that made Barbie uniquely charming. I rate Barbie a 9.5/10 and suggest you watch it in theaters.
