Glass Onion Review: Peel away at this movies layers to find the truth

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

A comedy, drama, and mystery film Directed by Rian Johnson about Benoit Blanc traveling to Greece to investigate his next mission

THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS LEAVE OR BE SPOILED.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Directed by: Rian Johnson, is about eight friends that get invited to an event by billionaire Miles Bron (Played by Edward Norton), an Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg-type figure coming up with crazy ideas that somehow work. They are there to solve a "Murder Mystery" that soon becomes real.
After the phenomenal Knives out, I had to watch the sequel, Glass Onion. It did not disappoint to surprise, excite, and entice me. Everything about this movie was incredible, from the casting to the smallest minute detail on set. Spoiler alert, but during the scene where everyone breaks the glass statues after seeing Miles Bran burn the original napkin with the schematics to Alpha Industries. There is a chandelier above Mile's head made of glass with little red squares, which is a little nod to the red envelope that held the original napkin. Everything in the movie is similar to our world. For example, it takes place during 2020, and everyone is wearing masks because there is COVID. The characters in the movie represent the higher class in society. Claire Debella(Played by Kathryn Hahn) is a Connecticut governor. Birdie Jay(Played by Kaye Hudson) and Duke Cody(Played by Dave Bautista) are social media influencers and Twitch streamers. Something to add is they either wore a see-through mask or didn't have one so people could see and recognize them to get attention. This slight detail matches their characters very well. Lionel Toussaint(Played by Leslie Odom Jr.) is the leading scientist at Alpha Industries.
What these characters have in common is that they are funded by or work for Miles Bron. Later in the movie, there is a flashback of Miles Bron "Socially networking" his partner Cassandra Brand (Played by Janelle Monáe). All her friends sided with Miles Bran because they held on to his "Golden Titty." The movie's message was that some friends in life are willing to throw you under the bus to get what they want, which is an unfortunate truth. The set design was terrific and fantastical; it looked like the Glass Onion ripped it straight from a dream. Also, the budget of 40 million dollars makes the VFX and Set design even more impressive. The acting in this movie was great, especially with Janelle Monáe as Cassandra Brand and her twin sister Andi Brand, and Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, then acting as an undercover duo was the most entertaining part of the film.
An example is when Benoit watches Andi get shot. Still, she survives due to her sister's notebook in her jacket pocket, so to convince the rest of the crew that she is dead, Andi pours hot sauce on her shirt and jacket. The movie was funny even though some of the jokes might've been outdated; nonetheless, they were still funny and managed to get the whole theater laughing a couple of times. Overall this movie was excellent, but the only thing stopping it from getting a 10/10 is the two hours and twenty minutes run time. Every scene in the film mattered, but some should've been removed to save time. Besides all of that, the film gets a 9.5/10. If you haven't watched Glass Onion, watch it in theaters before it moves to Netflix to get the best watching experience.
