Indiana Jones and The Dial Of Destiny Review: Retirement plan gone south?

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

An action-adventure film Directed by James Mangold is about Indiana Jones on one last adventure to save the world.
THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS LEAVE OR BE SPOILED.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, directed by James Mangold, is about Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Played by Harrison Ford) racing against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history.
I expected this movie to be fantastic and do great at the box office, but I was disappointed when I came out of the theater. The film was alright, and nothing fresh or special came from it.
The story felt like a repeat of the older Indiana Jones Movies. The basic synopsis was that Indie has to go on an adventure with a young female associate and sidekick. He has to fight Nazis, get into an action-packed chase scene, find clues for the artifact, and encounter life-threatening situations. Somehow this movie made two hours and thirty minutes feel like an eternity.
The acting was acceptable. Helena (Played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) is an odd character because she betrays Indie and then follows Indie simultaneously, which I need clarification on. Teddy (Played by Ethann Isidore) was the sidekick, and I didn't see any significant use for his character. Dr.Voller (Played by Mads Mikkelson) felt like a cheap throwback to bring Nazis back as a substantial villains instead of something fresh. I would've enjoyed the film if the villain had been written better and had motives that made sense. Indie and Voller had no real hatred, and it felt like Klaber (Played by Boyd Holbrook), the henchman, had real hatred towards Indie even though they barely knew each other; it would've been nice if they delved into that.
The action in the film was greatly executed. I loved the beginning flashback to the train because it hit me with nostalgia, sitting at home as a kid watching old Indiana Jones movies. I also think that the scene where Indie has to go diving to find the clues to where Archimedes' tomb is great, Eels were a funny way to bring back the Indies' fear of snakes.
The Cgi was questionable. All the explosions and the underwater shots were all good, but the part I disliked the most was the de-aging technology. The de-aging technology made Harrison Ford look like he was from an old video game. The shadow on the lips and teeth wasn't right. The light hitting his face made it look like he had a film over his head.
The ending didn't make sense to me. Indie wants to stay in the past with Archimedes because he has "No one in the future for him." Still, Helena knocks him out and brings him back to the future, where he meets his ex-wife Marion (Played by Karen Allen). It does not make sense that they have no natural character development with her, and she returns.

Overall this film felt like it was trying to relive the glory days of Indiana Jones by bringing in nostalgia bait, but it was overall a fun movie. This movie was a 6.5/10
