LIGHTYEAR Review: Tried to go Infinity and Beyond but missed

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

An adventure, sci-fi directed by Angus Maclane about Buzz Lightyear trying to get back home but in the process meets friends and has to defeat Zurg

THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS. LEAVE OR BE SPOILED
This movie is not directly related to the TOY STORY franchise. It's showing us a new Buzz with a separate personality and mannerisms. The Buzz we watch on a screen in Lightyear is Chris Evan's take on the Iconic space ranger. People that don't like this movie or refuse to watch it don't acknowledge it; I'm just clearing things up. Pixar's latest film, LIGHTYEAR, Directed by Angus Maclane, is about Buzz Lightyear, who is stranded on a planet and has to find a way to get home. But in trying to get home, he is put 100 years into the future, where he finds new allies and has to defeat Zurg. My thoughts on Chris Evans as Buzz were that he was great. Chris Evans made Buzz feel like a new and unique character while connecting him to the TOY STORY franchise with quotes like when "You're mocking me, aren't you" and "Not today Zurg."
Throughout the movie, we are introduced to new characters like Alisha Hawthorne (played by Uzo Aduba); she was an okay character, and I liked how she was the person that motivated Buzz even after her death. Izzy Hawthorne (played by Keke Palmer) was also an excellent character. Izzy's character development was nicely executed. When introduced, Izzy tried to impress Buzz and kept saying she was like her grandmother. Even though she had flaws like being scared of space, she overcame these flaws in the end, and her character development was significant. Mo (played by Taiki Watiti) and Darby (played by Dales Soule) were a hilarious duo, one being inexperienced and the other having been to jail and knowing how to deal with fighting and weaponry, which was fun to watch. SOX (Played by Peter Sohn) was adorable, hilarious, and unforgettable. SOX was always there for Buzz and had a hidden ability used in dire situations. Overall, the visuals and CGI used in the film were stunning and Stellar. Some of the shots looked beautiful, and the CGI made everything look realistic, and I loved every second of the visuals.
One of the film's Flaws was Alisha Hawthorne's impact on Buzz. When Alisha died, Buzz was sad and torn apart. But the audience didn't see much of them together, so we didn't connect much when she died because we didn't get to know her as a character, so when the twist of Zurg being future Buzz arrived, his motivations seemed lackluster Zurgs Motivation. Speaking of Zurg, the second flaw of the film was Zurg (played by James Brolin). James Brolin delivered an outstanding performance as Zurg, but Zurgs motivation never entirely made sense. Zurg is Buzz from the future who turns evil, but the way he turns terrible is just bad writing. Zurg is evil because the new commander tried to arrest him, which is a dumb reason to turn evil. Also, Zurg could've just taken the Crystallic fusion and gone to the past without Buzz. I don't know why he decided to take Buzz with him. Zurg, as a character, had many flaws, and I don't like Zurg in this movie. Overall I enjoyed this movie, but some spots could've been easily fixed and the reason that I like this movie is the nostalgia I have for Buzz Lightyear. If you don't get your villain done right, then your film can end up not great. Lightyear receives a rating of 7.5/10, but I suggest you watch the movie.
