NOPE Review: A unique take on a Sci-Fi, horror movie

Updated: Jul 26, 2022

A Sci-Fi, Horror film directed by Jordan Peele about a man that finds an alien that eats people around him and he has to stop it

THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS LEAVE OR BE SPOILED
NOPE, directed by Jordan Peele, is a movie about OJ Haywood (played by Daniel Kaluuya). He has to take over his father's horse business. OJ soon finds out that extraterrestrials are living in the clouds eating horses and people, and OJ has to find a way to stop them. I like the unique take on aliens in this movie and how there weren't stereotypical aliens that we would think of with big heads and eyes but an alien that looked like a UFO. In this movie, Jordan Peele was trying to convey the critical message that people are willing to do anything for fame and fortune. For example, the motorcyclist attempts to record the alien. But when he falls off the motorcycle and has his limbs broken, He tells OJ to pick up his camera and record the alien, which proves his message of how people are willing to do anything for fame and fortune. Another message that I think Jordan Peele is trying to convey is we believe that we can control animals. For example, Gordy the Chimpanzee is a chimpanzee that can't be tamed. But the movie studio still tries to make a show out of the chimp, leading to one of the child actors getting her face mauled by the chimp. Later in the movie Ricky Park (played by Steven Yeun) has a show where he feeds the alien horses. He thinks he can tame the animal, like how he almost tamed Gordy but trying to tame the alien ends up backfiring. The alien eats him and the crowd, which shows that we can't tame all animals. The acting throughout the movie was great and everyone impressed me with their acting. Daniel Kaluuya was very monotone during the movie, his character's father dies, so that explains why he is so monotone. Emerald Haywood (played by Keke Palmer) had the best acting during the movie. She ranges from being all goofy and more lighthearted at the beginning of the film to being freaked out and paranoid after finding out about the alien. Other than that, the movie is unique and phenomenal. I think there are some minor issues with the film that I will address; for example, how did OJ not know that Ricky was feeding horses to the aliens for six months? He should know because they live so close to each other; also, I would assume that there would be a massive group of people watching the alien, but there were 40 people there. Another plot hole is how OJs dad Otis Haywood SR. (Played by Keith David), died. He got a coin stuck into his eye. Later in the movie, you see Emerald hiding in the house with blood and items that the alien ate falling from the sky. Why was there no blood when the alien digested the coin onto OJs dad?. These little inconsistencies weren't much of a problem. After watching this movie, my review is 9.5/10; Jordan Peele never fails to amaze me with his films; I hope you enjoyed this review, and if you haven't, watch NOPE in theaters.
